  • Winter Wonderland

It’s winter in the office. The rain made it colder.

Almost everyone was in their sweaters and jackets. Guys included so you know how cold it is. Coldest ever in history.

Then, came a thunder while I was on the line with a customer. The line got cut off. It’s like the customer suddenly went dead. It was scary and before I knew it, the server was down. We couldn’t receive any incoming calls nor make outgoing calls. For the first time ever, we were free! I’m not going to answer anymore calls when there is thunder, who knows I might die while talking.

This guy sitting behind me likes my red Patrick a lot. Patrick the dog.

    “Your Patrick is so cute.”

I think he said that for 3 times.

I love my surrounding neighbours in the office. They give me warmth on a winter day like today.

It was so cold today, I was incapable of sweating while working out in the gym. I gave up and went to bathe.

Watched “Gubra” today. Laughed and cried. Disturbing and makes you think.

    Happy Good Friday!

  • The Personality Mug

I was always curious about the words printed on my colleague’s mug but never get to ask her about it.

Today over lunch, she came to join us for a conversation and she was holding on to her mug.

“I’m not shy. Just conversationally selective.”

One of us said it out loud.

    “That mug suits you!”

    One of us said.

She smiled and said, “Mr.A gave me this mug when he first saw me.”

I really really like the whole idea.

  • When Love And Hate Collide

It’s the Wednesday blues. I know there’s no such a thing because there would only be Monday blues but today is indeed a blue one for me. Working after a public holiday is not nice at all.

Problems. I get so many. I don’t know how to solve them all but I push myself to solve them. There is such a time when no matter how best you try to solve one, it will still never be perfect. Customer will hate me. Well, but it’s still better than not trying at all.

Then, a customer called and I had to tell her I’ll be able to handle her case since the person in charge is on leave. Someone has got to help her so knowing that it’s like committing suicide, I said yes. My name was called when the customer came and I had to walk out to the counter and pretend like I know what to do. I walked back in and was saying “Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit” repeatedly along the walkway that only I was walking. I asked for someone’s help and she was so nice, she helped me.

I walked back out again this time, saying “Oh man. Oh man. Oh man” repeatedly till I saw people. I cannot scold the customers on the phone no matter how dumb they can be and one colleague that certainly drove me crazy for the first half of the day so the only way to detoxify myself is by talking to myself while I was on the walkway where no one can hear me.

If there’s any day that I feel like killing someone, it’s today!

Tomorrow is definitely not going to be any better but I think I can still run another mile.

After work, went to the gym to work out. I joined a class today and so the amount of sweat is more. I just love it at the end of it when you get to smell your sweat. So smelly but so nice. The cool down song played was Def Leppard’s “When Love and Hate Collide” which made me feel so much better because I like this song a lot.

Came home to be served with yummy food. The rendang. The sambal. The steamed fish. The sayur bayam. The soup. I got to savour the moment because starting from next week, I will not be coming back with such servings anymore.

And while writing this, I’m eating “Hello Panda”. The Japanese biscuit with chocolate coated inside. It makes me happy just eating it.

    Without you
One night alone is like a year without you baby
Do you have a heart of stone
    Without you
    Can’t stop the hurt inside
    When love and hate collide

  • 21C

It’s good to know that I can talk to a friend until 3 am at the nearby mamak because I have not done that for so long.

Woke up this morning to catch a bus to Petaling Street. Mummy wanted to buy chicken from the wet market there and I still can’t figure why she wants to go all the way there just to get chickens. I stood there seeing the man holding the neck of the hen while it shrieked with all its might. The knife drew closer to its neck and it was then that I moved our eyes away. Bye bye hen. Hello chicken.

Mum bought 3 heavy chickens in which Iris and I took turns to carry it while we made our way back to Kota Raya to get another bus back home. I haven’t been on a bus for so long already. It reminds me of my muscle-building days, where the bus will always be jam-packed with people and I will be standing with a bag hanging on my shoulder, left arm with library books (they sure are heavy!), right arm holding on tight to the pole (the bus sure swings like mad at times)

Those days were smelly, sweaty and fun!

  • My Call is not Important to you!

I love the Monday today because tomorrow is a holiday! I was answering calls so happily while seeing the clock ticking away.

Wore a new shirt and I felt great. There’s just something about dressing nicely and feeling good. You walk around confidently too!

The bomb came when a customer shouted on the phone. She exclaimed, “MY CALL IS NOT IMPORTANT TO YOU!!” No hello. No nothing. I was stunned for a while before I knew why she said that.

It’s the voice message that keeps repeating if all the agents are busy. “Your call is important to us. Please hold while someone attends to you.”

I apologised to her and tried to win her heart again. She seemed okay after that.

I got to know a very nice colleague today. I was being bounced from one department to another internally to get answers to a question. Certainly not something I like being stuck in but I had no choice but to be bounced till I got hold of the correct party. I tried my luck to ask people that I think would be able to help me until a girl referred me to someone. She’s the quietest girl in the office but she’s very informative and knowledgable. She will always share with you when being asked. Better than those who talk so much but know nothing.

After that, I made a call and I wanted to look for a lady but a guy answered the phone and he asked me what I want. I told him but he sounded like he was unsure but was willing to check it out for me. That’s what I like to see in people too, trying even though they are not too sure. Helping when it’s not really their job.

“Grace, let me check and I’ll get back to you in half an hour’s time.”

And he did. My questions are all answered. Submitted my report and I wrote, “Dear Z, Thank you so much. You’re very kind.”

I hope to meet him in person next time.

  • Gracie is a Busy Bee

Sorry for not filling up the blanks for the past two days. I was busy, you see? Ha!

Today marks the end of my first week in the new office. It has been rather eventful and the problems are just flowing in and accumulating and each problem that comes our way are getting more complex and complicated.

Sometimes I wonder how to solve them because they seem to be unsolvable. You wonder whether you alone can solve it. But really, all it takes sometimes is someone to take the initiative to highlight the issue to the relevant parties and the rest will take its place. Like they say, terserah kepada Tuhan dan takdir. I’m trying my best to ask the correct person so that they can guide me on a solution and then it’s up to me to compose messages to be sent to relevant parties across the different offices in the world to get it solved. Sometimes, it’s exciting to be able to communicate with colleagues from different offices in the world. Whether or not you get a reply is another thing but I find it fun even though the problems are really big. When I get a reply, I feel so happy. Of course, I don’t usually feel this way when I’m actually doing it, solving it. It’s only after the day is over and I’m reflecting on what I’ve done today that I feel somehow contented and accomplished in some way.

I’ve learnt that when I work here, anything can happen. And I mean ANYTHING. Things that are unimaginable would happen. And you have to solve the unimaginable when the customers call you unexpectedly. When you get to solve the unimaginable, you feel really amazing. Then, your customers will treat you as their God and love you to bits. Some lah. Not all.

Because why? Some people just love to give you a hard time even though they know they need to depend on you to solve their problems. It’s like they like you and you know it but they still want to give you a difficult time.

Customers bugging you is enough to kill. So when you have the sales person chasing you after they have been bugged by the customers, then it’s not nice. I’m getting calls from this sales lady on my mobile phone, asking me to do things for her customers. It’s not that I don’t know because the customers have been calling me directly. I only answered once. Then, she called me a few times during lunch and I didn’t get to answer them. I will only entertain people who call me on the hotline.

That aside, my forehead has been reading as “The Paper Remover” because there’s a colleague of mine who would call out to me once the paper gets jammed in the printer.

    “Grace!! Paper jam!!”

I don’t know why she would call for me. She would be seen like she’s going to pull her hair off anytime and keeps opening and closing the printer cover like as though the jammed paper will disappear with her doing that. Then, Gracie comes and pull out the stupid cartridge (I’m saying this because it is really a very stupid printer) and then pulling the jammed paper out, putting the stupid cartridge back (because putting it once never works, you need to pull in and out until you find the perfect fit to it) and then the colleague would exclaim, “OHHH…finally!”

It’s either that or she would complain why the printer is so slow. I mean of course it’s slow since there’s only one pathetic printer to be shared by so many people. Spooling takes time and dah lah it’s a stupid printer, it’s going to take an even longer time.

“Grace, why cannot print? Why is it not coming out?”

You know, when people know you’ve studied IT, they expect you to know how the printer and the fax machine work. Paper gets stuck in the printer is also my problem.

Lunch time is the most interesting time of all now that most of us eat in. We ta pao from home. You get to sit around and listen to stories that you wouldn’t want to hear. Horror stories of crazy customers. Horror stories of people not liking their boss. At times, I cannot eat in peace. But then, it’s good to be in the loop, to be aware of what’s going on.

I must play hard this weekend because next week is going to be another challenging week.

You have a fantastic weekend too!

  • Things I discovered today:

    1. Leaving the house at 7:30am now is not going to bring me to the office on time. I need to leave earlier. *cries*

    2. I am still shy.

    3. I work in a freezer.

    4. I will not have Internet access for a week in the office. This is totally unacceptable but surprisingly, I’m working fine without it.

    5. Malaysia exports a lot to United States of America. China exports a lot to Malaysia.

    6. Some shirts are just made to fit me. Aku cantik hari ini.

    7. When a customer asks for your mobile number, it means he/she likes talking to you.

    8. When you wonder how long you’ve never spoken to a particular customer, he/she will call you. Like what happened today. She said, “Grace, saya rindu lah!”

    9. When people are too cold, they cannot think. The mind freezes.

    10. When a colleague of mine is feeling so stressed, she would place her blue Kilometrico above her ear, walk around while fanning herself with her hands and when she sees you, laughs evilly.

    11. You wouldn’t know there can be 6 functionalities to the new office chair if not for the briefing given by another colleague who is bothered enough to read the manual to it.

    12. A colleague stands in front of the hot drink vending machine but dare not press on any single button and tells you, he has never seen anything like that before. So, I demonstrated to him. He seemed happier after that. I can understand where he’s coming from because I didn’t dare to press on any button when I first encountered the machine.

    13. I am still shy.

    14. The team I’m currently in now are made up of nice and friendly people. 🙂

    15. I think I’m okay.
